A nicely presented German "three-quarter" sized
instrument from the just before the turn of the twentieth century.
Viol shaped with a flat back and angle. The instrument is not labelled.
A great
many instruments of this type and quality seem to have led particularly
hard lives. This one however is - overall - in pretty good shape.
We like the fact that the instrument still retains its original
light-brown spirit-varnish, we like the fact that the instrument
still retains its original wooden pegs set on brass half-plates,
we like the fact that the instrument still retains its original
beech-wood neck that produces a "D" opposite the neck position and
we like the fact that both the front and back have purfilling.
Yes - many instruments of
this type only have what we call a "scratched" purfilling - so the fact that
this one does have real purfilling - does indeed suggest that it
is of better quality. The fact that the pegs are set no brass half-plates
also suggests a better quality than the average.
The overall condition of this
instrument is pretty good. The instrument was restored in late
2000 by the Greenwich based "Master" craftsman - Roger Dawson and
sports a new bass bar of the correct proportions and a well executed
sound post patch. All cracks have been neatly studded and there
is a Dawson sound-post and fixed bridge.
No - not much at all. All we've done is clean the
instrument up a bit, fit a new tailpiece and endpin unit of quality
and put on a set of the new Velvet Blue strings.
For
a budget string - we have to say that they are very impressive
indeed. They are very easy on the fingers, have really good flexibility
and produce a wonderful gutty type of sound which will definitely
appeal to a lot of you jazzers and slap players.
Yes
the instrument comes with a Dawson insurance valuation dated October
2000 and there is a repair invoice that dates to July 1987 from
a Harvey Weston.
We feel sure that you
will be well impressed with the quality and volume of sound that
this smallish instrument produces. With a very advantageous string
length of only 105.0cm the instrument feels good and easy to play
too. As for the value aspect we are confident that you won't find
a better-presented old instrument for this sort of money.
