Instrument description: Large French viol shape instrument with two-piece flat back. Varnish: Original. Spirit based of a plumb-red colour. Wood: The spruce table is characterised by a wide to medium-wide grain. The back shows wood with quarter-sawn markings and an attractive strong flaming. The ribs seem to have been cut on the quarter and show an attractive 'mottled' figuration. The scroll is plain. Machines: The instrument was originally made as a three string. All the cogs are from the period and are well matched. Any Labels: One label - placed on the upper treble side back. Reads - 'Repaired by William Skelhorn, Altringham, Cheshire, May 1962.' Restoration and correctional work: Re-thickness work to reduce an over-thick (12mm in some places) table to the correct dimensions. Remove old bass bar and replace with new. Extensive half edge work and replacement edge work to the table as necessary. Repair work to close the back centre join. Wash out all cracks in ribs, re-glue and secure with studs. Re-set and reshape neck and finish with new fingerboard. Fit new top nut. Fit new high saddle. Clean varnish. Touch in varnish. Fit endpin unit, clean and polish cogs. Refit cogs. Solder high-tension wire to tail piece. Fit new sound-post and adjustable bridge. Fine tune set-up. Cost of restoration and fittings: In excess of £5000-00 inc VAT. Sound: Big round and gutsy with lots of colours. Overall impression: A beautifully presented instrument with perfect string length and large quality sound. This is such an easy-to-play instrument it almost plays itself. Superbly fitted-up with an adjustable bridge this instrument will most definitely appeal to the jazz playing fraternity.
